Already for the ninth time, International Czech-Finnish Hockey School is ready to go

The end of July is just a couple of weeks away which can only mean one thing, the international project of two hockey countries is here again. International Czech-Finnish Hockey School will be held this year in Jihlava again. Last year, the Czech side asked for permission to change the hosting place from Finland to Czech which was accepted. This year, it was the Finnish side who asked to move IIHS to Czech again. This request was accepted as well. Therefore, the Finnish part of IIHS will arrive in the Czech Republic on Monday, July 22nd. The very next day, on Tuesday, IIHS starts and will be seven days long. Last year raised the bar high by the hockey quality, and because young players took penalty shots against Calgary Flames goalie David Rittich.

First IIHS happened in 2011, and the rules have not changed yet: IIHS is for players 13 years old (for younger only in extraordinary occasions) Players are split into two Czech-Finnish teams, so, for example, a defensive pair has one player from Czech and one from Finland. Coaches are mixed into those two teams as well. IIHS selects players strictly based on hockey quality, attitude towards sports, and school performance.

Even the founders of IIHS (Bedřich Ščerban, Tereza Ščerbanová, Hannu Tyry and Timo Haapanen) did not know how successful this project would be. Since the first year, the project has become well-appreciated thanks to hard work from both sides of this project. Some players that experienced IIHS have played in national teams, were drafted to NHL, and some of them have won league championships or are playing in youth national teams. However, IIHS also brings hockey legends that give away awards to these young guys, such as, Stanislav Neveselý, Raimo Helminen, Jukka Tammi, Josef Augusta, Sasu Hovi, Alexander Barkov, David Rittich, Martin Nečas, Josef Kořenář, Bedřich Ščerban, Viktor Ujčík, Petr Jaroš, Jaroslav Špaček, Lauri Marjamäki, Lukáš Sáblík…
